What type of autism testing do you offer and how does it work?
I provide autism evaluations for children 3+ and adults. I have worked with both populations for many years. I am well-versed in the different presentations of autism in adults and in girls and women. I take special care to work with both populations competently and provide quality care for both.
I invite you to visit the testing pages for children or adults to see what specific tests are administered. Autism testing for adults is done with the adult independently or with a partner or parent to provide more information. In children, there are interviews with parents, but testing is done independently with me. Sometimes, parents must step in and provide some direction.
Can assessments be administered over telehealth?
Yes. Since Covid, many tests have been normed for online use. I use valid tests that are normed for remote use. Many of the questionnaires make the testing process simpler.
Why do mental health testing?
Most people come to the testing process looking for answers about what they are experiencing. Often, they are experiencing mental health symptoms that may be comorbid with an autism diagnosis or may be the cause of symptoms. A mental health evaluation allows for a complete picture of what you are experiencing and may guide treatment. Testing also allows for immediate intervention when suicidal ideation and intent are present.
Is there a downside to tele-assessment?
Yes. There are several factors that make tele-assessment more difficult. I can only see the individual from the waist up, so I might not notice some body movements. Technology can sometimes get in the way. There may be a disconnection due to poor internet service, the screen may freeze briefly, or our voices might become distorted. These things are taken into consideration when interpreting results. There is an upside too. You are in your own home where you are comfortable and can mask less. I can see the environment that you live in and you or your child can share your interests directly with me instead of just telling me, leading to more productive conversations about “special interests”. Also, if I notice you moving, I am likely to ask you if you are fidgeting with your arms or legs.
Do you accept insurance?
I am in the process of paneling with insurance companies.
Do I need a referral for testing?
You do not need a referral, but I do work with other healthcare providers if they make a referral or if you request it.
Are the results of me or my child’s testing accepted by my doctor, therapist, school, employer, or University? Can I use the results to apply for county services or disability?
I provide a medical diagnosis of autism, which involves using valid assessment tools to diagnose autism and perform cognitive testing, and adaptive skills testing. This fulfills the requirements for the state of Minnesota to apply for services. I have not experienced a situation where my reports and findings were not accepted and used for accommodations and treatment purposes.
Do you offer in person assessments and therapy?
Yes. I prefer in person work and getting to know people in real life. My practice is located in the heart of St. Cloud at 600 25th Ave. S., Suite 104. Many people travel for testing and several hotels are located within 5 minutes from my office.
Why are you so passionate about this work?
Two of the people I love most in my life are autistic. I have lived through their journeys and am dedicated to getting children and adults appropriate diagnosis and intervention. As an Autistic practitioner, I also appreciate your need to understand yourself and name your lived experiences.
